At long last, the Spanish Government is promoting the long-awaited and well-known "Democratic Memory Law" (through the preliminary draft of the Historical Memory Law), wherein an Additional Provision of this Law establishes the possibility of acquiring Spanish nationality for all those born outside of Spain to a father or mother, grandfather or grandmother, who had originally been Spanish, and who, as a consequence of having suffered exile for political, ideological or belief reasons, renounced Spanish nationality, and therefore, their relatives may now opt for said nationality – the purpose of article 20 of the Civil Code, i.e., any descendant of a Spanish grandfather or grandmother.

This declaration must be formalised within two years from this law entering into force.
