Spanish Nationality

Nationality can be obtained either through the New “Grandchildren’s Law” (Law of Democratic Memory 20/2022) which is currently in force, applicable to the descendants of Spanish grandparents or parents; even great-grandchildren can apply for it in certain Consulates (Miami-Mexico), either by option if they have Spanish parents, or by residence in Spain (remember that Latin Americans have a special regime compared to other countries; since with 2 years of residence in Spain they could already apply for Nationality, which is very advantageous).

Non-lucrative Residency Visa

This visa is also known as the ‘visa for retired persons’ because it allows you to reside in the country without carrying out professional activity and by demonstrating that you have sufficient economic means. The amounts are based on the IPREM in Spain at the time of application. In 2024 the minimum annual amount required was set at approximately $31,200 for the applicant, and another $7,800 for each additional family member applying.

It is the ideal visa to move to and reside in Spain for those who wish to retire or simply want to live in Spain without working.

The Non-lucrative Visa allows non-European citizens with sufficient funds to reside legally in Spain without carrying out any professional activity, both for the main applicant as well as their family.

Initial residence is granted for 1 year, after which time it will be renewed for two years, and then for a further two years.

Finally, permanent or long-term residence may be obtained after 5 years. It is important to note that these years will be counted towards the subsequent acquisition of nationality.

Investor Visa (Golden Visa)

This visa allows you to reside in the country as long as you make an investment in real estate in Spanish territory for a value equal to or greater than 500,000€. It is the ideal visa if you wish to buy a property, allowing both the applicant and their companions to work, if they deem it appropriate.

This visa also allows you to reside in Spain without the need to become a tax resident, unless you stay in Spanish territory for more than 183 days a year.

This visa will only be in force until the 3^rd of April 2025, so anyone who either has a property in Spain worth at least €500,000, or who is acquiring a property worth €500,000 or more, should apply for it as soon as possible!

Digital Nomad Visa

This visa allows you to move to Spain with your family as long as you meet one of two options; you are an employee whose company allows to travel and work remotely from another country (in this case Spain) or you are a self-employed worker with several clients around the world or sources of income derived from online activities but outside Spain.

Student Visa

This visa allows you to reside in Spain as a student for as long as you continue studying and also allows you to work legally for a total of 30 hours a week, depending on the type of study you undertake.

Work permit for employed persons (hired by a Spanish company)

This is an authorisation that allows foreigners to reside temporarily and work in Spain as employees, through an employment contract with a Spanish company.

Self-employment permit (with your own business project)

Authorisation for temporary residence and work for a foreigner who is not resident in Spain to carry out a lucrative self-employed activity through the development of his own business project.

NIE

The Foreigner's Identity Number (NIE-Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is mandatory for any foreigner who carries out any act with fiscal transcendence in Spain. It is necessary to live in Spain, it is a personal and non-transferable number, unique and exclusive, issued by the General Directorate of the National Police.

Residency for Highly Qualified Professionals (doctors, architects, engineers, etc.)

This authorisation is aimed at foreign professionals with a job offer in Spain, for the development of an employment or professional relationship in a management position or activity for which a higher education qualification is required or, exceptionally, a minimum of three years of professional experience that can be considered equivalent to this qualification, related to the activity for which the authorisation is granted, must be accredited.
